Arts Council England:

Artscouncil

Sarah Weir, Executive Director of the Arts Council London says, “The Lomographic Society's ambitious Congress will bring together artists from around the world and testament to London's international reputation for creativity. We hope that as many people as possible will take part in this innovative global project, right here on our doorstep, opening Design Week with spectacular style.”

The Arts Council England works to get more art to more people in more places. We develop and promote the arts across England, acting as an independent body at arm’s length from the government. Between 2006 and 2008, we will invest £1.1 billion of public money from the government and the National Lottery in supporting the arts. This is the bedrock of support for the arts in England. We believe that the arts have the power to change lives and communities, and to create opportunities for people throughout the country. From 2006 to 2008, we have six priorities: taking part in the arts, children and young people, the creative economy, vibrant communities, internationalism and celebrating diversity.

“The Lomographic Society's Central Office - the pulsating heart of one of one of the most extraordinary communicative international networks of our time - is located in Vienna, in the very heart of Europe. It is therefore with the greatest of pleasures that the Austrian Embassy supports the 7th Lomography World Congress, which will be held in London from 17 to 23 September. We look forward to fascinating discussions, exhibitions, installations and a further insight into the challenges for the future.” Ambassador, Dr. Gabriele Matzner-Holzer

Statement on the future of film:

Fujifilm research shows that film remains a popular medium, and although it has experienced some decline, and forecasts predict it will continue to do so, it still has a strong fan base that will ensure it continues for some time to come. There are still modes of photography for which film remains the natural medium. Landscape photographers, for example, often feel passionately that film remains the best possible format for their art. This is especially true of Fujifilm’s famous Velvia colour slide film which, having been discontinued due to lack of raw materials, is now back by popular demand. A huge amount of Fujifilm’s R&D has been dedicated to reworking Velvia’s original formula to achieve the same stunning results, demonstrating the company’s belief in film as a viable medium for the future. Almost half of the volume of printed photos still originates from film. Fujifilm has released 6 new emulsions in the past two years, indication indeed of our commitment and confidence in film.

HMS President Ship:

Hmsship

There have been nine HMS President’s moored on the Thames in central London since 1650 – The first ‘The Old President’ was a 26 gun wooden warship - the current HMS President (1918) was built as a first world war “Q” ship. She was first moored on the Victoria Embankment 85 years ago in 1922. She has adapted her role with the times, once the base for the Royal Navy Reserve she is now a private business and entertainment centre, The President’s lower deck house offices and studios for more than 12 businesses and on the upper decks, a Ball Room, bars and decks provide London with a venue for many (and some very unusual) celebrations, events, exhibitions and presentations.

I believe the demand for films will never disappear, neither in the near future nor long term, as many people love the traditional photography with the special qualities of the analogue film - the warmth and specific color and grain characteristics that only film is able to deliver. In addition, there are billions of different types of analogue cameras spread in the households all over the world - and a substantial part of them will be definitely used in the future as well.
